If you are anything like me, then you would love to have the opportunity to have your layouts published in one of the several scrapbook magazines. Although I have been scrapbooking creatively for about five years now, it has been just in the last two months that I have been submitting my layouts to the print magazines, such as "Creating Keepsakes" and "Memory Makers". I had several reasons for why I waited so long to submit my layouts: 1) I wasn't totally sure how to go about submitting my layouts; After researching websites and the magazines themselves, I became much more confident in how a scrapper can submit their layout. I also bought a scanner this year, so I would be able to submit my layouts for very little cost, and I also realized that sure, while not sending my layouts in would keep me from being turned down, I was keeping my layouts from being published by holding them back. I know that many of you are wonderful scrappers yourself, and I encourage you to submit your layouts to the magazines, if that is something that interests you. Below you will find the general guidelines for submitting layouts to several scrapbook magazines. Sending the magazine a copy of your layout The first step in getting published is sending the magazines a copy of your layout. DO NOT send the magazine your original copy. If you are selected for publication, they will write you and ask for your original. To send a "preview" of your layout, you have three options: ELECTRONIC SCANS: I prefer to send magazines the copy of my layout through file attachments, which are created after I scan a copy of my layout into my computer with my scanner. Here are the important scanning tips: *Resize your image to 72 dpi and a width of approximately 400 pixels for a 8.5"x11" layout and 500 pixels for a 12"x12" layout. *Save the file as a JPEG (.jpg) format. PHOTOGRAPHS: If you would like to send photographs of your layouts to submit to magazines, first remove their page protectors, and place them in indirect like, such as light coming through a window. Do not use fluorescent lighting. COLOR COPIES: Another option for sending your layouts is by sending a color copy. When sending 8.5"x11" layouts, you will not need to make an adjustments to the copy, however when sending a 12"x12" layout, you will need to copy at approximately 69% to get it to print on a 8.5"x11" copy paper. Where To Send Your Layouts Creating Keepsakes Mailing Address: Electronic submissions: Other notes: Creating Keepsakes limits files size to less than 500k. This is not hard to do, especially if you follow my resizing information above. Memory Makers Magazine Mailing Address: Electronic submissions: PaperKuts Mailing Address: Ivy Cottage Creations Mailing Address: Other notes (as described on their website): Write your name, phone number, address, and e-mail (if available) on each page submission. The page must be an original idea - no copied ideas will be accepted. Write detailed instructions on how you constructed each page. List the brand name, color, etc. of all products used, including paper, scissors, templates, pens, stamps, ink color, software, fonts, etc. ©2002 Brandie Valenzuela
