Featured Anthology:
Joyful Noise
A selection of poems and songs that trace America's diverse spiritual
traditions. This comprehensive survey includes Native American songs,
traditional Protestant hymns, nineteenth-century transcendental verse, and
selections from major modern and contemporary authors, such as T.S. Eliot,
Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Langston
Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Agha Shahid Ali, Mark Doty, Jane Hirshfield, and Denise
Duhamel.
All poetry is spiritual," Robert Strong points out in his introduction. "As I
worked on this anthology, I heard this sentiment again and again, from poets and
readers alike. The spiritual, after all, is what our existence soaks in; it is
both everywhere and ineffable, always right here and just out of reach. We see
it in blades of grass, sense it in love and in the cries of newborns, in the
eyes of the dying, in volcanoes and choirs..."
About the Author
Robert Strong lives north of the Adirondack wilderness with his wife and infant
son. He received a Ph.D. in creative writing from the University of Denver and
an MFA from Naropa University; his undergraduate work was done in the Faith,
Peace, & Justice Program at Boston College. He was a Mellon Fellow at the
Massachusetts Historical Society for his research in the conversion narrative.
He is the author of Puritan Spectacle (Elixir Press) and an assistant
professor at SUNY Canton. He is currently writing a book on the social history
of Sunday in America
Also by Robert Strong
Puritan Spectacle is a newly-imagined bible for our rapidly-diminishing
idea of America. It is, by turns, startling and profound, playful and
terrifying, utterly original yet, seemingly, simply overheard. --Nick
Flynn, author of Some Ether and Another Bullshit Night in Suck
City.
Seriously funny and deadly serious. --Eleni Sikelianos, author of
The California Poem.
Puritan Spectacle risks its protest in unapologetically singing our
most sanctified, most deadly, and most repressed values-- that all of it
was made for us and is owed to us and so must be consumed by us.
--Richard Greenfield, author of A Carnage in the Lovetrees.
