The Splinter Generation is currently accepting submissions from writers who were
born between 1973 and 1993 for an ongoing online generational literary
compilation. We are looking for the best poetry, creative nonfiction and fiction
these writers have to offer. In particular, we're looking for work that captures
what it is to be a member of our generation.
We have undertaken this project again because our generation -- and literature
in general -- is facing a challenging moment in history. While the problems of
the world may often seem insurmountable, we believe there is still power in
literature. Our voices still matter and we intend to find the strongest voices
of our generation. Many mainstream publishers no longer have the resources or
the will to publish important, emerging writers. But we do. And we will, because
this is a time when we need fresh literature to make sense of our world.
Whether you have previously published or not, we want to hear something fresh.
We know this may mean thinking outside of what "literature" has generally come
to mean. Because we love writing, we are seeking work that is based on the
written word, but, in the spirit of our generation, the work may also (though it
does not have to) use links, video, audio, or any other tools the internet has
to offer. What we want is something powerful and something that embodies what it
means to be a member of this generation. Send us work that will wrap us in a
story while making us think deeply. In short, send us your best work that
represents who you are and advances whatliterature can be online.
Simultaneous Submissions are accepted and even encouraged. If you do submit
simultaneously, please let us know immediately if you've been accepted
elsewhere. Previously published work may be considered, but please let us know
the details of the previous publication in a cover letter.
Specifications:
Prose: Maximum 2500 words
Poetry: Maximum three poems, any length (besides epic)
Deadline: Rolling, but reading period closes November 1. We are publishing
excellent work as we get it, so if you have something excellent that is ready,
send it now! Certain authors we publish before October 1st may be asked to
read, either remotely or in person, at a reading series in Los Angeles this
winter.
Please email submissions to splintergeneration@gmail.com with the genre
(fiction, poetry or nonfiction) in the subject line. Submissions are accepted on
a rolling basis.

We are now accepting submissions for Bylines Writers Desk Calendar and we
invite dedicated, serious writers who have been published and paid for their
work to submit an entry. All genres and disciplines are welcome.
Submission Guidelines
We're looking for succinct personal stories about the writing life. The oh-wow
success tales, the naked truth about what motivates you, the heartache of
rejection, the toughest lessons, the joy and pain of freelancing. Humor is
good, so is pathos. Please avoid routine, trite, ordinary stories. Read the
many insightful submissions in the current Bylines and you'll see what we
mean. We strongly urge you to read these entries so you understand what we're
looking
for.
The best way to see what we're looking for is to obtain a copy of Bylines
2009.
Writer's Bio
A few sentences about yourself. You're not dry and boring, so your bio
shouldn't be either. Give us your accomplishments but round out your profile
so our
readers feel like they'd like to meet you for coffee. Or a beer.
Submission Length
The combined word count of your writing paragraph and bio should not exceed
300 words. We want room for your photo. However, don't send your photo yet.
We'll let you know if your submission has been chosen and request your picture
then.
Writer's Photo
If your submission is accepted, we will require a high resolution photograph.
You may send a digital image as long as the resolution is 300 dpi or higher.
If you do not have a high resolution digital image, please send us a quality
snap shot that we may use. Please note, your photograph will not be returned.
Do not send us your photo until you are notified that your submission has been
accepted for the calendar.
Submission Method
Send your submission via email in text, RTF or Microsoft Word format to:
info@bylinescalendar.com
Include your full name, address, phone number, email address and website in
the body of your submission. Do not mail hard copies.
Fine Print
We reserve the right to edit submissions and bios chosen for Bylines but you
will have the opportunity to approve any changes. Bylines has one-time use
rights. Submissions and photographs will not be returned. We will accept
previously published work; just let us know when and where it appeared. Writer
agrees that pull quotes from their submission may be used on the Bylines web
page, or in other marketing.
Writer Compensation
1. Exposure and promotion. Bylines is sold at bookstores nationwide and on the
Internet. Your website and email address are listed in the calendar (with your
permission), and we provide a link from our website to yours. If you're the
outgoing type, we help arrange book signings at your local bookstore and/or
interviews with your local media. We also send out hundreds of press releases.
2. You get one free calendar and discounts on additional purchases.
3. Money. It's only $5, but at least you can count us as a paying market.
Remember, this is a labor of love, a tribute to writers and a break-even
project.
Grandmothers
Everyone has a great story about the unconditional love between grandmothers
and their grandchildren. We are looking for wonderful stories celebrating
grandmothers and grandchildren, written by grandmothers about being a
grandmother, and by grandchildren about their grandmothers. Stories about
stepgrandmothers and honorary grandmothers are welcomed also. We are not
looking for stories from children so please save those for a future book. The
deadline date for story submissions is August 31, 2010.
Grieving and Recovery
Grieving is a difficult process that those who have lost a loved one must go
through in order to get to the recovery phase. This important collection of
stories will be like a support group that will offer comfort and understanding
and show you that, no matter how devastating your loss is, you are not alone.
You can get through the process and, with time, you will regain your strength
and move forward with your life. The deadline date for story submissions is
May 31, 2010.
Mothers and Daughters
Mothers and daughters… they are, at the same time, very similar and also
completely unique. Mothers show daughters who they will become. Daughters live
out mothers’ dreams. Through birth, childhood, teen years, adulthood,
grandchildren, aging, and every step in between, this relationship can be the
best, the hardest, and the sweetest. The deadline date for story submissions
is December 31, 2010. This title will not publish
until 2012.
My Cat's Life
As many of you know this title was going to focus on the grieving and recovery
process we humans go through after the loss of a beloved cat. However, despite
the many heartwarming and inspirational stories you have submitted, we decided
that the topic is too narrow. In its new form the book will focus on all the
memorable ages and stages our cat’s lives. Starting with kittens, it will
cover the prime years, aging cats, and finally the twilight and the end, when
our dear friends leave us. We want to capture the experience of living through
the natural life cycle with our cats. Because of the title’s initial form we
expect to have a nice large section on grieving and recovery (which isn’t
filled despite our collecting submissions!). The deadline date for story
submissions is May 31, 2010.
My Dog's Life
As many of you know this title was going to focus on the grieving and recovery
process we humans go through after the loss of a family dog. However, despite
the many heartwarming and inspirational stories you have submitted, we decided
that the topic is too narrow. In its new form the book will focus on all the
memorable ages and stages of our dog’s lives. Starting in puppyhood it will
cover a range of middle years, senior dogs, and finally the twilight and the
end, when our dear friends leave us. We want to capture the experience of
living through the natural life cycle with our dogs. Because of the title’s
initial form we expect to have a nice large section on grieving and recovery
(which isn’t filled despite our collecting submissions!). The deadline for
story submissions is May 31, 2010.
New Moms
Becoming a new mom is the most amazing experience, unique and unlike any
other. From the moment that baby is placed in your arms, there is an
incredible feeling only a new mother can know. This book celebrates the
physical, emotional, and spiritual experience of having a child and creating a
family. We are looking for heartwarming, insightful, and humorous stories
about raising babies and toddlers that share with our readers the wonders of
early motherhood. We are also looking for stories about pregnancy and
infertility issues. The deadline for story submissions is
July 31, 2010.
Preteens
The preteen years – those years from nine to twelve can be rough from both a
physical and emotional perspective. You are not a kid anymore but you are not
yet a teen. There are so many issues to deal with and sometimes it feels like
you are all alone. You are not! The stories in this book – almost all of them
written by preteens just like you – will prove that to you. We are looking for
stories that will inspire you, make you laugh, make you think and let you know
that life is not as bad as it might seem. The deadline date for story
submissions is December 31, 2010.
Teens
A completely new book on one of our most requested topics – TEENS. The stories
in this book, written almost entirely by teens, will be stories that you will
want to read again and again. They will serve as your guide on topics such as
the daily pressures of life, love, school, friendships, parents and much more.
We are looking for stories that will encourage you, inspire you, make you
laugh, make you cry and show you that, as tough as things can get, you are not
alone. The deadline date for story submissions is
December 31, 2010.
Young at Heart
So, you’ve crossed that magic age and you are ready to retire or start a
second career. But you’re not ready to stop living! You feel energetic and
young and there is still so much to see and do and enjoy. We are looking for
stories that will share with our readers humorous and fun adventures from
those who are actively enjoying their "senior years!" Tell us about your new
careers, your volunteer work, your sports and sports cars, your new love
interest, your travels, your families and all of those things you always
wanted to do that you are finally doing now that you have the time. The
deadline date for story submissions is December 31,
2010.
