CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Something Old, Something New

Small Town Wedding Anthology Seeks Submissions
Simpler times, treasured memories

Details: www.rockingchairreader.com

We invite you to submit your very own slice of Americana for consideration in
this one-of-a-kind anthology series. (Selections begin immediately.)
Theme: Something Old, Something New will feature 60-70 true stories that
revolve around weddings and/or marriages that take place in America's small towns.
We are searching for stories about love and happiness, humorous anecdotes,
and everything in between. In addition to family stories that have been passed
down from generation to generation, we hope to harvest the more personal
stories that, until now, have been held close to the heart. We will consider any
story "written from anyone's point of view "as long as it takes place in a small
town in America, is a true story, involves falling in love and the promise of
wedding bells, and/or speaks to the reader of love and marriage. Smalltown
weddings are steeped in family and community traditions and we would be honored if
you shared those traditions with us.
Ideas: finding Mr. or Mrs. Right, the marriage proposal, engagement parties,
bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, choosing the wedding gown, planning the
wedding, best man and maid of honor, wedding toasts, the wedding and reception,
the honeymoon, and the many beautiful days afterward. We ask that you share
your story of love and contentment, humor, and happy-ever-after with us in the
form of vivid word-weaving and great storytelling. We want stories that travel
full circle and are inspiring as well as entertaining. We are open to a wide
spectrum of reflection and inspiration. See specific guidelines below.
(Questions and queries are welcome.)
Each volume of The Rocking Chair Reader features true stories that
demonstrate life in smalltown America as seen through the eyes of widely published
authors as well as new authors. Stories are told in first person with one main
character and one supporting character, and/or written in an "as told to" format.
We are all individuals with complex mannerisms and different methods of doing
things, yet we share essential and fundamental characteristics that solidify
who we are and connect us as a nation. American traditions and cultures are a
part of our heritage. Something Old, Something New is Adams Media's way of
helping us all reconnect with our roots.
At this time, we are excited to inform you that we are also collecting
stories for the first Christmas book in The Rocking Chair Reader series. The
deadline for Smalltown Christmas is April 2005. Please specify which title you are
targeting by typing the words "Something Old, Something New" or "Smalltown
Christmas" in the subject line of your submission.

Submission Guidelines:
500-1,000 words in length
True, upbeat, and positive
Set in smalltown America
We have particular interest in stories set between 1900 and 1955 (or as told
from that timeframe)
Each story will reflect smalltown traditional values
Please send a cover letter, the name (and state) of the small town where your
story takes place, a short 3-4 line bio, a complete address and phone number
where you can be reached, and a current e-mail address with each submission
E-mail is preferred (no attachments please; copy and paste your submission
into the body of an e-mail). E-mail to: rockingchairreader@adamsmedia.com
You may also submit your story to
Rocking Chair Reader

Adams Media
57 Littlefield St.
Avon. MA 02322
Fax: 508-427-6790

Authors will receive byline and bio, copy of the book, $50 for each accepted
story, or $250 for the story selected as the lead story. Additionally, ten
stories from various places across the United States will be chosen as stand-out
stories and each will be followed by a special two-page town profile, which
will include historical facts and/or vignettes from local historians. Future
volumes are planned; suggestions welcome.
What we do not want are stories that involve the supernatural, New Age,
graphic material, or violence. We also do not seek stories previously published in
anthologies (with the occasional exception of small regional publications).
Everyone has a story that bears repeating. We invite you to share your story
with the world through The Rocking Chair Reader, and help us captivate the
heart of America with a series we are sure will quickly become another Adams
Media bestseller

Chicken Soup for the Mother’s of Preschoolers Soul
Stories to refresh the soul and rekindle the spirit of Mom’s with little ones.

Details: http://www.chickensoup.com (Click on "StoryGuidelines")

Blessed are all mothers of preschoolers -- for they are part of a unique club of diaper changing, soggy cheerios, taming temper-tantrums and playing make-believe. Skilled in the art of time management, nursing and teaching, they devote themselves 24/7 to repairing broken toys, mending boo-boos, exploring the world of bugs and always prepared to answer, why mommy?

Join us as we share, laugh and reminisce with mothers of preschoolers for their devotion, love and sacrifice during this precious period of time. We invite you to contribute a true story, article, or anecdote that will bring comfort, laughter and inspiration, and express a new language of love to those who shape young lives with their hands, hearts and souls. Chicken Soup for the Mother’s of Preschoolers Soul will celebrate this magical time only a mom can know. By sharing special moments, rejoicing small accomplishments and rekindling a sense of herself and her spirit, these stories will encourage mothers around the world and remind them of the importance in their role as “mommy.”

Chapters and Topics will include:

  • Making A Difference – stories about the significance that mothering matters.
  • Small Accomplishments – stories to bring peace and balance in the midst of daily chaos.
  • Pigtails and Froglegs: Learning a New Language of Love – stories that teach us that love comes in all shapes and sizes.
  • Friendship: Mommy Play Dates – stories about encouragement from friends, family and other moms.

We’re looking for inspirational, true stories, 1000 words or less, that will make readers laugh, cry, or sigh. Stories should be positive, universal, and non-controversial. Plymouth Writers Group

Details:Visit our web site: http://oz.plymouth.edu/~megp/

Plymouth Writers Group is compiling its tenth annual anthology of teachers’ writing.  Our title and theme for this year’s volume is Acts of Emancipation.  We tend to think of emancipation in epic proportions, as in Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. There are, however, countless moments of emancipation in our everyday lives, when we free ourselves from our assumptions, our old ways of looking at things. There are also moments in which we emancipate others—let go of our claims on them.  We are looking for fiction, essays, poetry and narrative which speak to those moments which seem to free us and others.  Sometimes we can be freed in a literal sense, or freed from what confines us internally.  Sometimes it is only in looking back on a situation, in re-visiting it through writing are we able to understand its liberating aspects and the light it sheds on all of our experience. We are soliciting writings from teachers about acts of emancipation in the classroom or in other aspects  of life.  While we are interested in personal narrative essays based on classroom life, we do not publish scholarly work, or editorials related to the teaching profession, as our focus is on the publication of creative literary work.

Please send two clean copies of your manuscript.  Prose manuscripts should be

500-3,000 words in length and single spaced (approximately 1-6 pages).  The name, address, telephone number and teaching affiliation of the author should be included on a title page, but not on the manuscripts.  Please send no more than three pieces, no more than two of which may be prose.  Send to:

Meg Petersen/Plymouth Writers Group

Deadline:  Submissions must be received no later than March 31, 2005 in order to be considered.
