CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Something Old, Something New Details: www.rockingchairreader.com We invite you to submit your very own slice of Americana for consideration in this one-of-a-kind anthology series. (Selections begin immediately.) Theme: Something Old, Something New will feature 60-70 true stories that revolve around weddings and/or marriages that take place in America's small towns. We are searching for stories about love and happiness, humorous anecdotes, and everything in between. In addition to family stories that have been passed down from generation to generation, we hope to harvest the more personal stories that, until now, have been held close to the heart. We will consider any story "written from anyone's point of view "as long as it takes place in a small town in America, is a true story, involves falling in love and the promise of wedding bells, and/or speaks to the reader of love and marriage. Smalltown weddings are steeped in family and community traditions and we would be honored if you shared those traditions with us. Ideas: finding Mr. or Mrs. Right, the marriage proposal, engagement parties, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, choosing the wedding gown, planning the wedding, best man and maid of honor, wedding toasts, the wedding and reception, the honeymoon, and the many beautiful days afterward. We ask that you share your story of love and contentment, humor, and happy-ever-after with us in the form of vivid word-weaving and great storytelling. We want stories that travel full circle and are inspiring as well as entertaining. We are open to a wide spectrum of reflection and inspiration. See specific guidelines below. (Questions and queries are welcome.) Each volume of The Rocking Chair Reader features true stories that demonstrate life in smalltown America as seen through the eyes of widely published authors as well as new authors. Stories are told in first person with one main character and one supporting character, and/or written in an "as told to" format. We are all individuals with complex mannerisms and different methods of doing things, yet we share essential and fundamental characteristics that solidify who we are and connect us as a nation. American traditions and cultures are a part of our heritage. Something Old, Something New is Adams Media's way of helping us all reconnect with our roots. At this time, we are excited to inform you that we are also collecting stories for the first Christmas book in The Rocking Chair Reader series. The deadline for Smalltown Christmas is April 2005. Please specify which title you are targeting by typing the words "Something Old, Something New" or "Smalltown Christmas" in the subject line of your submission.

(Click on "StoryGuidelines") Blessed are all mothers of preschoolers -- for they are part of a unique club of diaper changing, soggy cheerios, taming temper-tantrums and playing make-believe. Join us as we share, laugh and reminisce with mothers of preschoolers for their devotion, love and sacrifice during this precious period of time. We invite you to contribute a true story, article, or anecdote that will bring comfort, laughter and inspiration, and express a new language of love to those who shape young lives with their hands, hearts and souls. Chicken Soup for the Mother’s of Preschoolers Soul will celebrate this magical time only a mom can know. Teacher Anthology
TOM HOWARD/JOHN H. REID SHORT STORY CONTEST
This Lit mag is accepting submissions for the next print issue, # 9, due out summer 2005. Deadline to submit is May 1, 2005
Plymouth Writers Group Plymouth Writers Group is compiling its tenth annual anthology of teachers’ writing. Our title and theme for this year’s volume is Acts of Emancipation. We tend to think of emancipation in epic proportions, as in Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. There are, however, countless moments of emancipation in our everyday lives, when we free ourselves from our assumptions, our old ways of looking at things. There are also moments in which we emancipate others—let go of our claims on them. We are looking for fiction, essays, poetry and narrative which speak to those moments which seem to free us and others. Sometimes we can be freed in a literal sense, or freed from what confines us internally. Sometimes it is only in looking back on a situation, in re-visiting it through writing are we able to understand its liberating aspects and the light it sheds on all of our experience. We are soliciting writings from teachers about acts of emancipation in the classroom or in other aspects of life. While we are interested in personal narrative essays based on classroom life, we do not publish scholarly work, or editorials related to the teaching profession, as our focus is on the publication of creative literary work.
Please send two clean copies of your manuscript. Prose manuscripts should be 500-3,000 words in length and single spaced (approximately 1-6 pages). The name, address, telephone number and teaching affiliation of the author should be included on a title page, but not on the manuscripts. Please send no more than three pieces, no more than two of which may be prose. Send to: Meg Petersen/Plymouth Writers GroupEnglish Department MSC #40 Plymouth State University Plymouth, NH 03264 Deadline: Submissions must be received no later than March 31, 2005 in order to be considered.
