Seeking submissions for Aunties: Not Just Another Mother
to be published by Ballantine Books in 2004, edited by Ingrid Sturgis,
well-known author of The Nubian Wedding Book: Words and Rituals to Celebrate and
Plan an African-American Wedding (Crown) and editor of Essence.com. The book
highlights the rarely explored relationships between nieces or nephews and their
aunts. The aunts considered must be blood relatives of your mother or father and
can be of any nationality. Looking for descriptive, engaging and vivid accounts
about a favorite or not-so-favorite aunt or
great-aunt. Original work considered from novice and experienced
authors.Submissions from men and women of color encouraged. Length: 1,000 to
4,000 words. Small honorarium. Deadline: March 31, 2003. Manuscripts must be
typed or word-processed, double-spaced and paginated. Include your name,

also be like your other mother or a protective older sister. She can be a
confidante who hears all your secrets or a serious competitor who makes you work
harder to outshine her. Or the adventuresome aunt who took you on
journeys and in doing so expanded your outlook.How about stories about your
church-going auntie who always gave you a hanky filled with crumpled bills to
help you pay your way through college or who is still sending you a few dollars
on your birthday. And the favorite aunt who shared her life with you
and in doing so taught you a little bit about ife. Or the sister-aunts, so
different yet so much the same, who compete ferociously for your affection
and in doing so, shower you with gifts and love.

and Grateful Americans"
I am seeking stories and essays from members of the U.S. Armed Forces, their
families (spouses, children, parents & siblings), and grateful Americans who
appreciate the sacrifices made by the
men and women of the U.S. Military.
In addition to being a freelance writer and author, I am a third generation
military wife. The purpose of "Freedom Isn't Free:
Words from Military Members, Their Families and Grateful
Americans" is to honor and pay tribute to the members of the U.S. Armed Forces
as well as offer support and inspiration to military members and their families,
and give the general public a glimpse into military life and remind everyone
that freedom has a price.
Deadline: April 1, 2003
Word Count: 2,000 max
Submissions can be thought provoking, humorous, serious, heartfelt,
inspirational, or reminiscent.
Possible topics and areas of interest could include but are not limited to:
Military Members:
~Your feelings about leaving your family
~The pride you have in your job
~Explaining how being a member of the military is more than "just a job."
~A story about an unusual or interesting experience you've had as a military

Work and Parenting anthology
Balanced Parenting is a nonfiction anthology of stories by dual-career parents
about how they manage to "balance" parenting, their relationship and work, while
still maintaining some semblance of sanity. We are looking for true
stories focusing on the joys and frustrations of parenting while working, as
well as tips and tricks for keeping it all in balance. Stories
should be about your experiences as a dual-parent, working couple and written in
a style which is honest and open - the way you wish you could be with your
friends, family and coworkers.
We welcome submissions from working couples of all racial and socioeconomic
backgrounds, parents of both sexes and sexual orientations, married and
unmarried couples who both work by choice or necessity. Both parents can work
outside of the home, or at home, or one of each. Topics include, but aren't
limited to:
Making your boss your ally as a parent
Reactions to your parenting issues at work
When 9 to 5 isn't: explaining overtime to your toddler, managing guilt about
too much time away, getting home at bedtime, etc.
Managing time when you don't have any: are you allowed to have hobbies anymore?

Jefferson and Rosanne Welch. Rosanne is a television writer and author of The
Encyclopedia of Women in Aviation and Space. Dawn also writes for television and
is a columnist for Africana.com, writing on issues of children, family
and popular culture. *Essays should be between 2,000 and 3,000 words in
length.
