Wanted: stories in the ghostbreaker tradition (John Silence, Jules DeGrandin, X-Files, Kolchak the Nightstalker, Ghostbusters) – we’re not looking for pastiches but new and creative cases from today’s brightest writers. Helpful hints: we are receiving too many stories without ghostbreakers in them. This is not a straight horror anthology. Longer stories would be preferred too. Most seem to be around 2000 wrds. Looking more for 4000 to 5000. Longer if possible.

What We Need
Newsletter Articles and Manuscripts

We're interested in articles and manuscripts on just about every aspect the paranormal. Types of articles needed are: ghosthunting techniques, places to go, ghosthunting etiquette. We especially want helpful resources for ghosthunters and those interested in the paranormal and we are always interested in how the paranormal is perceived and viewed in other countries. How-to articles are sometimes accepted.

Most needed manuscripts: Ghosthunting for beginners, haunted places (not rehashes of what has been published in the past).

Fiction
Stories must be out of the ordinary and exceptionally well written to catch our attention. We don’t want typical ghost stories or stories involving something completely out of the realm.

Antidotes (yes, really)
These should be very well written and humorous to paranormal buffs. We are looking for pieces personal or legend, which have history
behind them.

Rights
We buy original articles for the Unseen Press newsletter. For original material, we negotiate rights.

Generally, we use more subject-specific pieces for the site (e.g. the technical side of ghost hunting, theories on certain aspects of the paranormal). For website-only articles, we either make an outright purchase or ask for exclusive first worldwide serial and electronic rights for one-year exclusive archival rights.

Book length manuscripts and stories intended for our 2003 anthology are bought outright. This means that all rights are transferred to us at the time of payment (see Payment).

A Word About Credentials
We do not ask that you be a published writer (though the experience helps), however, we do ask that you give us an idea about what makes you qualified to write for us.


Word Length
Original Articles: 500 words (newsletter); up to 1000 for website. Rarely will longer articles be considered.
Antidotes: 100 words
Fiction: Maximum of 3,000 words (website only).
True stories: No set limit as long as the work moves along and the matter is pertinent to spinning a good story.
Manuscripts: 50,000-100,000 depending on subject matter.


Payment

Original Articles: outright purchase or 3¢/word (U.S.), to a maximum of $100.
Antidotes: $5 (U.S.)
Fiction: $50 (U.S.)
True Stories: Negotiated.
Manuscripts: Negotiated.

Payment is on publication. We offer several methods of payment. For authors within the U.S., we offer payment by check or through PayPal . For international authors, we offer payment by U.S. funds check, PayPal, or as an Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de gift certificate. These can help you avoid the penalties and fees of having to deposit a check in US funds. Advertising in exchange for material is also possible.

Please send your query or completed work to editor@unseenpress.com. For manuscripts, we accept Microsoft Word attachments. For articles ONLY, we will also accept text in the body of your email. Please send text in emails with no formatting other than a space between paragraphs.

Snail-mail manuscripts also accepted. Send manuscripts on 8.5 x 11 paper using either Times New Roman or Arial font, in either 10 or 12 point with one-inch margins all around. A business sized SASE should be included for our response or an email address provided.

VERSAL / call for submissions

VERSAL, the literary journal of wordsinhere, invites submissions of poetry, fiction, essay, and review for our premier issue. We are looking for writing that is urgent, involved, and unexpected.

Submissions are due 14 October. Length guidelines: poetry, 5 poems; prose, 4000 words. No simultaneous or previously published submissions. All email submissions should be saved as an '.rtf' file and attached to the email; please title your subject 'submission'. Submissions by post should include a SASE with international reply stamp or an email address for reply.

Forever in Love: A Poetry Celebration of Love and Marriage will make a perfect wedding or anniversary gift. This book will have the poetic tone of Mothers and Daughters except the poems will focus on married relationships. Selections will generally be a positive reflection of love and marriage, but will also cover tough passages such as struggles, sickness, and death. Chapters include: The Search, Attraction, Longing, Courtship, Merging, Commitment,

Struggles, Mature Love, Reflections, Partings, and Inspiration. Submissions are open.

Please limit your submissions to no more than 3 per book.

For all of my books, I find that short submissions, no more than 24 lines, work best and those that don’t lecture, but rather, enlighten. Prayers submitted to any of the books should be interfaith. Poetry submitted does not have to be religious or spiritual, but the poems should be insightful, encouraging, or inspirational. Previously published work will be considered. For all submissions, please refer to my nine previous anthologies for the desired spiritual tone. Any dedications or personalization should be removed before submitting your work in order to make it appeal to a wider audience.

All submissions should be typed, double-spaced, titled, and submitted one per page. The contributor’s name (the way it should appear in the book), address, and phone number should be listed at the top of each page. (If you have an email address or a fax number, please include it with your submissions. While I don’t accept regular submissions via email or fax, I sometimes send an "alert" via email if I need poems for a particular chapter in a current book—or if a proposed project sells quickly and I have a tight deadline to meet.)

Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with sufficient return postage. All those submitting work with an SASE will eventually receive a reply. Response time is approximately 4 months. The books receive major publicity. I market my books strongly and strive to find additional recognition for contributors, such as publication in national magazines and newspapers. Poems and prayers from my books have appeared in USA Today, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, New Age Journal, the "Dear Abby" column, and many newspapers. Many poets have been contacted by card companies to have their poems featured on a card as a result of exposure of their poem in one of my anthologies. Poems are used on a non-exclusive basis: You retain all rights. My books feature poetry from approximately 20% classic and famous authors and 80% contemporary writers.

The most common reasons for rejections:

Too specific to one religion: poems need to be accessible to people of different faiths and beliefs

Too long: generally poems of 24 lines or less work best in these books

Does not fit in with theme of book

Not universal enough: too specific to your experience

Too prescriptive

Too complex or not easily understood

Lacks the poetic quality I’m seeking

Terms: $25 + one complimentary copy of the book for each poem published
