STORIES NEEDED ABOUT PETS, THEIR OWNERS AND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THEM.

I am currently working on an anthology of short stories detailing the complex relationships between owners and their pets. Can be any animal, from a chicken to a pig to a cow, but should show a moral -- teach a lesson, as it were.

The anthology is designed to teach without lecturing, tell without telling, educate by giving examples. Endings may be happy or tear-jerkers, but all must instill in the reader a small gasp, a small "I never realized that!" so they may grow in their relationships to their animals, and so animals may suffer less in the hands of their owners, even though the owners' intentions are well-meant.

Stories may run between 500 and 2,000 words, and each should be followed by the author's name, address, email (for my purposes only), plus an author's bio of 50-75 words.

The Contest:

Write a 1,000 to 2,000 word original article or essay based on the theme "Hope." Entrants can contribute essays about a situation that seemed impossible but during which they clung to that last remaining shred of hope, a person who exemplifies the spirit of hope despite being faced with obstacles, a circumstance when all seemed lost and yet hope prevailed, or an article about how hope got someone through an overwhelming challenge—whatever idea comes to mind when you think of "Hope."

All entries must be previously unpublished.

Submission cut-off date is December 31, 2003. No entries will be accepted after the cutoff date. PLEASE don’t wait until the last minute to send in your entries! Enter now while you’re thinking of it and save yourself the express mail postage expense.

Hints:

Move us with your words. Make us feel what you are feeling. Touch our hearts and souls.

Don’t ramble. Just tell the story.

Follow ALL directions EXACTLY.

The Rules:
  • All entries must be TRUE. They must be typewritten in English, double-spaced, on white paper using Times New Roman, Courier, or Arial 12 pt. font/typeface. (Please also have the story available electronically. If your story is selected for publication, we will request it electronically via email or on CD ROM or disk.)
  • All entries must contain a minimum of 1,000 and a maximum of 2,000 words.
  • All submissions must be the original, unpublished work of the entrant.
  • The entrant’s name must not appear on the entry itself. To ensure an impartial competition, judges will not know the name of entrants. Each entry will be numbered upon receipt.
  • All entries must be accompanied by a 3 x 5" index card or 3 x 5" piece of white paper containing the following information:
    Full legal name
    Pen name (if applicable)
    Street Address
    City, State or Province, and Postal Code
    Country
    Daytime Phone
    Evening Phone
    Email address (if applicable)
    On the backside of the 3 x 5" card or paper, please include a brief bio (up to 40 words) for inclusion with your story if it is selected for publication.

  • All entries must include a check, cashiers check, or money order for $25.00 (U.S.) made payable to: Obadiah Press 2003 Contest. In the event any check is returned for insufficient funds, that entry will be disqualified and returned to the entrant.
  • You may enter as many times as you wish. Each entry must be complete and separate. Do not mail multiple entries together.
  • All entries must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2003. No late entries will be accepted. We are not responsible for lost or misdirected mail.
  • This contest will be cancelled—and all entry fees returned—if there are fewer than 100 entrants.
  • * Prize money is determined by the number of entrants. Assuming this contest generates at least 100 entries but fewer than 1,000 entries, winners’ prize money will be adjusted by that factor. For example, if there are 100 entrants, the grand prizes will be 10% of the $5,000 prize, or $500 each; if there are 900 entrants, the grand prizes will be 90% of the $5,000 prize, or $4,500 each. Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received.
  • The top 50 entries will be published by Obadiah Press in an anthology volume based on the "Hope" theme. This book is the second in a series. By entering this contest, contestants hereby grant Obadiah Press the first right to use their story entry in this volume, to be published as a trade paperback original and in any subsequent reprints of that volume. Obadiah Press may also use the story for promotional purposes in conjunction with the publication of the Hope anthology including on their web site and/or in Obadiah Magazine. Authors retain the right to republish the work elsewhere as a reprint in any form after it is released in the anthology; however, this republication should give attribution to the volume in which the work first appeared.
  • Submissions will be judged on language skill and writing ability, originality, creativity, and the ability to touch the reader.
  • Winners will be notified and cash prizes awarded within 30 days of the contest cutoff.
  • The top 50 winners will receive their free copy of the Hope anthology immediately following publication which shall occur within one year of the contest cutoff date.
  • The decision of the judges is final.
  • The names of all winners and the title of the winning entries (all 50) will be published on the Obadiah Press website. In addition, a brief press release will be prepared for each winner to forward to their local media.
