Call for Submissions: Asian-American Teen Anthology (October 15, 2003)

Are you an Asian American teenager? Do you write poetry or create art? Want to get published? Well, here’s your chance to share your voice with the world! Compiled and edited by young Asian Americans like you, this anthology will explore the contemporary Asian American experience by highlighting poetry and art from teenagers across the country. They're interested in ALL types of poetry and artwork on anything that has affected your life, no matter how trivial, from identity issues to the day-to-day frustrations of being a teenager. The poetry can be in any form—prose poetry, humor, free form, narrative, etc.

General Guidelines for Submissions

You have to be 13 – 19 years old and of Asian/Pacific descent (including bi-/multi-racial teens) living in North America to submit to this anthology (e.g., if you currently live in the U.S. and trace your roots to Asian countries like Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam). You can not apply if you turn 20 before our deadline. An editorial committee consisting of five Asian American teenagers and AAWW’s Arts-in-Education Director will review your poetry and artwork. They are looking for unpublished original work.

 If your work is chosen for the anthology, you will receive a $100 artist honorarium and a free copy of the book. Send up to five pages of poetry, double-spaced, typed or hand-written legibly in print (no cursive writing). All poems must be titled. Send four copies of each poetry submission. Poetry submissions will not be returned. Send up to five pieces of your art or photography; attach the name and title to each piece. Please do not send originals, we will not return art submissions. They only need one copy of each art submission. Art submissions should not exceed 11" x 17" in size. Please note that artwork will be printed in black and white. Each submission should also include: a brief biographical description of yourself. They want to know more about what inspired you to create this piece, so include the answers to the following questions: 1. What inspired you to write this piece? 2. What is the message you are trying to get across? 3. What communities do you belong to or feel most comfortable in? They also want an extra sheet with your name, date of birth, address, telephone number and email address.  Send all submissions to: AA Youth Anthology, The Asian American Writers’ Workshop, 16 West 32nd St, Suite 10A, New York, NY 10001.

The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2003 (i.e., your work must be in their office by this date, this is not a postmark date). To ensure that submissions arrive on time, please send in your work at least one week prior to the deadline.
