Father-Daughter Adventure Travel Anthology

Father-Daughter Adventure Travel Anthology, Edited By Wendy Knight

Fathers have a profound impact on their daughters, shaping their abilities to

love and ultimately to venture forth, physically and emotionally. Often,

daughters inadvertently and purposefully break down the artificial walls of

masculinity with a purity and power that mothers, wives or girlfriends

cannot. The proposed father-daughter travel anthology will examine

father-daughter relationships in the context of travel, particularly

adventure or international travel. The book is not a compendium of

father-daughter trips, but a collection of stories that weaves together the

thrill of an adventure with the complex and unique issues surrounding the

father-daughter connection-- approval, abandonment, protection, control,

courage, blame and pride. What assumptions about our fathers or daughters are

confirmed or modified when we travel or recreate outdoors? Travel new

territory? Revisit familiar terrain? How do gender roles modulate or amplify

with the adversities that arise in the wild? Do our fathers or daughters

inspire or inhibit our outdoor pursuits? Has fatherhood tamed our sense of

adventure? Intensified our protective instincts? How do we see each other

differently?

Possible themes/issues to explore:

bulletA father's or daughter's influence on our relationship to the natural world,
bulletTravel, outdoor recreation
bulletImpact of a daughter's birth on our approach to travel or the outdoors
bulletUnderlying tensions discovered, ignored, resolved
bulletMonumental or subtle discoveries during a travel or wilderness experience
bulletThe illness, injury, disappearance or death of a father or daughter
bulletGender differences related to pushing physical limits, taking risks, dealing
bulletwith adversity, finding balance, compromising, getting lost
bulletCommunication barriers in father-daughter relationships
bulletAcceptance
