The ABCs of Copyright Law: An Interactive Outline Copyright is a bundle of rights provided by a government that attach to created works. Generally, these rights are exclusive to the creator of the work (called the "author") and do not follow the ownership or possession of the actual work itself. For example, when an artist sells a landscape that she has painted, the buyer does not have the right to copy the painting and sell the copies unless the artist has transferred that right to the buyer in writing (such a writing is usually called a “license”). These rights are called “copy” rights because the first laws passed protected only the right to copy written works. Today, copyrights also protect other exclusive rights in the expression included in any creative work.
