POETRY SOCIETY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

National Contests

Lynne Bennett
PO Box 1615
Concord, NH 03302-1615

Please note limit is forty lines. Name and address must appear in the upper
right hand corner of the copy on which they appear. NO identification is to
appear anywhere on the second copy.

The Poetry Society of New Hampshire sponsors four National Contests open to all poets, members or not. Judges for the contests are not members of the
Poetry Society of New Hampshire. Prizes are awarded to four places, 1st place, $100, 2nd place, $50, 3rd and 4th places $25 each. Winning poems will be published in our quarterly magazine, The Poets Touchstone, and winning poets will receive one copy of the issue in which their poems appear. Rights revert to the author after publication.

Guidelines
Entries that do not meet the guidelines will not be considered or returned.
Poems must be postmarked by the deadline date.
Subject and form are open.
Length limited to 40 lines.
One poem per page.
Poems must be typed.
Submit two copies of each poem, one with NO identification (no name, no  address), the other with the name and address in the upper right corner. #10 SASE for winners list only. Poems will not be returned.

Poemcrazy is the poetic analog to Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird or Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones, two classic works on how to forget that you "can't write" and just start the pen moving. Susan Wooldridge is a swimming instructor in the wide ocean of language, encouraging us to move ever farther from the shore, dive deep, and dance on the waves.
A Poetry Handbook This slender guide by Mary Oliver deserves a place on the shelves of any budding poet. In clear, accessible prose, Oliver (winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for poetry) arms the reader with an understanding of the technical aspects of poetry writing. Her lessons on sound, line (length, meter, breaks), poetic forms, tone, imagery, and revision are illustrated by a handful of wonderful poems. What could have been a dry account is infused throughout with Oliver's passion for her subject, which she describes as "a kind of possible love affair between something like the heart (that courageous but also shy factory of emotion) and the learned skills of the conscious mind." One comes away from this volume feeling both empowered and daunted. Writing poetry is good, hard work.

Entry fee is $3 for the first poem, and $2 each for others. Entries limited to 5 poems per poet per contest.
Poems must not be previously published, have won a prize, nor be currently entered in another contest.
Poems must be postmarked by the deadline date. Deadlines are: August 15th, November 15th and February 15th, May 15th. Mail poems and check payable to the Poetry Society of New Hampshire to the
address above.

Black Male Writers

The Black Scribe Consortium is currently seeking submissions from male African-American, African-Caribbean, African, African-European and African-diaspora writers for inclusion of their works in anthologies of messages to Black women. We are interested in all genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essay, short play, humor, romance, spiritual and original visual art work (black and white only) - absolutely no erotica.

We are Black male writers focused on creating paths through the barriers that exist in the industry and psyche of publishing.

Send us your very best - but a maximum of two submissions, please. Because these are anthologies, there must be a limitation on the length of submissions. Submissions must not exceed 2000 words, and much shorter submissions will receive equal consideration. The key thing to remember is that these are messages of Black male writers to Black women.

We will review e-mail submissions only. Please include the text of your submission in the body of your e-mail, along with a very brief bio. We will delete any incoming e-mails with attachments. We are open to reading the works of unpublished and under-published Black male writers (which describes most of us). E-mail submissions to blackscribe@sunbeach.net

Please allow time for our readers to review submissions. We will respond to you as soon as possible.

Compensation: $100 per accepted submission, upon publication.

Future Washington Anthology

Details:http://www.futurewashington.com/

Imagine the future of Washington DC. Planned Release Date: July 1, 2005

Although Washington needs to be the central character or setting, it need not be both. Stories could be set anywhere, but they need a relationship with Washington as a focus. I'm interested in as many different viewpoints as I can get, examining how changing technology, demographics, geo-political shifts (will this be the Asian Century?), DC's peculiar lack of statehood and its consequences, climatic change...feel free to imagine the future. I do want a futurist cast to the collection though, so I'm asking people to try and imagine "possible" futures.

Deadline: April, 2005
We hope to have most of the stories in by the end of March
.
