With the Gods: An Erotic Odyssey"
-- an anthology inspired by classical mythology edited by Mitzi Szereto (to be published by Thunder's Mouth Press/Avalon Publishing Group, NY).
Classical mythology has always contained a strong undercurrent of the erotic. It is my goal as editor to take this to a further erotic realm, fostering the creation of a new myth based on the classical. Although the main focus will be on the Greco-Roman tradition, I will consider material outside of this area. Select your favourite myth and go where your imagination takes you! Contemporary themes preferred. (**NOTE: some myths have already been taken. Please check with me before embarking on a story. And yes, I WILL consider non-Greco-Roman myths.)

We're looking for inspirational, true stories, 1000 words or less, that will
make readers laugh, cry, or sigh. Stories should be positive, universal, and
non-controversial. The "point" or "message" should be evident without preaching.
No essays, commentaries, tributes, philosophical or biographical pieces will be
accepted.
You may submit more than one story, whether original or a favorite from
magazines, newspapers, or other sources. For each story selected in the book, a
50-word biography will be included about the author and a permission fee of $200
will be paid.

Due to the volume of stories we receive, we are unable to respond to each
contribution. Finalist, only, will be notified prior to publication.

Ray Burrell Poetry Award

The Ray Burrell Award for Poetry accepts submissions of poetry, any style,
unpublished, in English.
Rules and Fees
Submissions must be typed or word processed, and single-spaced, on plain white
paper, to 60 lines.
Send two (2) copies of each entry, one with complete identification, including
e-mail if available, and one with no author's identification.No limit in number
of entries. Entry fee is $5 Canadian per poem, payable to
the Valley Writers' Guild. Fee is $5 per entry within Canada, and $5 USD outside
Canada. Paid up members of the Valley Writer's Guild submit their first entry
for free, all others at regular fee. No correspondence will be
entertained. Manuscripts will not be returned. Your SASE will be used to inform
who the finalists are. Bios will be solicited. Winner to be announced by end of
January 2006.
Prizes and Publication
Grand Prize is $500 and an engraved plaque. Secondary prizes are $200, $100, and
3 Honourable Mentions at $20 each will be awarded. All of the winning stories
will be published in The Grist Mill, and winners will receive a free copy plus a
year's subscription to The Valley Writers' News. For a list of Winners, send a
Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) with correct Canadian postage or an
international postal reply order (available at your own local post office). For
all winning entries the Valley Writers' Guild reserves the right of first
publication in a subsequent issue of The Grist Mill, published within the
following year with a free contributors' copy.

CONTEST GUIDELINES:

Format
Creative nonfiction should be double-spaced Poetry should be in its printable
form.
Identification
For creative nonfiction, the title of the work should appear on the top right
corner of each page, with page numbers. No other identifying information should
appear on the submission.
For poetry, the poem title should appear on the first page and each continuing
page, with page numbers. One poem per page, please. Notes: Winners and
honorable mention contestants will have the chance to appear in
Open Windows 2006 in the autumn of 2006. Those appearing will be asked to
submit, via email, an electronic copy of the work.
Send a SASE for a list of winners.
Poems and creative nonfiction will be judged separately. Ghost Road Press
authors (who have books with the press) are not eligible for the contest, but
may be solicited to appear in the anthology.
